What is Canbus?
Canbus (Controller Area Network bus) is the electronic communication system used in modern vehicles to allow various components to talk to each other. When you fit LED bulbs to a car that uses a Canbus system, the car's computer can detect that the bulb draws significantly less power than the original halogen or Xenon unit — and incorrectly interprets this as a blown bulb, triggering a warning light or causing the indicator to flash rapidly (hyper-flash).
Why Do LED Bulbs Cause Canbus Errors?
Standard halogen bulbs draw around 55 watts. High-quality LED bulbs typically draw 6–18 watts for the same or greater light output. Modern Canbus systems monitor the electrical load on each bulb circuit and flag anomalies. When an LED draws far less power than expected, the system raises a fault.
This commonly affects:
- Headlight bulbs (dipped and main beam)
- Indicator / turn signal bulbs
- Number plate lights
- Interior and footwell lighting
How to Avoid Canbus Errors
The simplest solution is to choose Canbus-compatible LED bulbs from the outset. These are engineered with built-in resistors or load equalisation circuits that mimic the power draw of the original halogen bulb, preventing the car's computer from detecting a fault.

What If I'm Already Getting a Canbus Error?
If you've already fitted LED bulbs and are seeing warnings, there are a few options:
- Replace with Canbus-compatible bulbs — the most reliable long-term fix.
- Fit inline load resistors — these are wired in parallel with the bulb to simulate the halogen load. They work but generate heat and are less elegant.
- Fit a Canbus decoder — a plug-in unit that sits between the bulb and the vehicle's loom, handling the load simulation for you.
Which Vehicles Are Most Affected?
Canbus sensitivity varies by manufacturer and model year. As a general rule, most European vehicles from 2005 onwards use Canbus monitoring on at least some bulb circuits. Brands most commonly affected include Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Ford, and Volvo.
