BMW Headlight Repair Guide: Ballasts, Modules & LED Upgrades

Common BMW Headlight Problems

BMW vehicles are well-known for their advanced lighting systems, but with complexity comes the potential for faults. Whether you own a 1 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, or X5, headlight issues are among the most frequently reported problems by BMW owners in the UK. The good news is that most faults are caused by a single failed component — and a direct OEM replacement gets you back on the road without replacing the entire headlight assembly.

BMW HID Xenon Ballast Failure

Many BMW models from 2005 onwards were fitted with factory Xenon HID headlights. The ballast — an electronic control unit that ignites and sustains the Xenon arc — is one of the most common failure points. Signs of a failing ballast include one headlight flickering, failing to illuminate, or taking significantly longer to reach full brightness than the other side.

BMW 4 Series F32/F33/F36/M4 (2012–2017)

These models use OEM ballast part numbers 63117533073 and 63117316187. Our direct replacement ballast is a plug-and-play swap compatible with the F32, F82 M4, F33, F83 M4, F36 Gran Coupé, X5 F15, and X5 M F85.

BMW 1 Series F20/F21 (2010–2015)

The F20 and F21 1 Series use headlight control module part number 63117316145. Our OEM replacement module is a direct, plug-and-play replacement for faulty units found under the headlamp assembly.

How to Diagnose a BMW Ballast or Control Module Fault

  1. Visual check — is one headlight noticeably dimmer, flickering, or not working at all?
  2. OBD scan — connect a diagnostic tool and check for headlight-related fault codes.
  3. Swap test — if accessible, swap the left and right ballasts to confirm whether the fault follows the component or stays on the same side.
  4. Check connections — corrosion or moisture ingress on the ballast connector is a common cause of intermittent faults.
